March 2015 – Eagle of the Month

Gary M. is 12 years old and an example of the power of personalized interventions. Two years ago, Gary’s teacher asked that Gary be paired with a mentor because he frequently seemed withdrawn. Gary’s teacher also noted that although Gary was smart, he didn’t push himself to excel. Therefore his grades were average. Once Gary was matched with Ken J, a director of investments at Wells Fargo, his entire demeanor changed. Gary sought out success for himself and quickly rose to the top of his class. Now in his 3rd year, Gary recently earned 1st honors and received the citizenship award for the first half of the school year. Gary says that his mentor taught him that there is nothing wrong with showing people that you are smart and that school can be very rewarding.
