Got an Hour a Week? Use it to Mentor a Child!
In honor of National Mentoring Month I am inspired by the special bond between a mentor and the child he or she loves, supports and nurtures. A mentoring relationship can make a huge difference in the life of a boy or girl. The benefits of mentoring include improved self-image, reduced high school drop-out rates, improved academic skills, and an increased knowledge of career opportunities.
Studies show that youth who are part of a positive mentoring relationship are more likely to experience success in school and maintain strong connections with family members and peers. Research also indicates that the impact of mentoring reduces the likelihood of drug and alcohol use, and juvenile delinquency. Adults mentors also derive a great deal from their associations - - the satisfaction of helping a child overcome obstacles, have fun and develop new interests.
Each year mentoring programs at Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club empowers kids to succeed through structured, positive relationships with caring adult staff and volunteers. Youth ages 6-18 are encouraged to value education, develop the capacities they need to succeed, and ultimately realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. I encourage you to enrich the life of a child by becoming a mentor. Your life will be enriched too! For more information about getting involved in our mentoring programs follow the link.
